About the University: 

California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) opened in 2002 as the newest campus in the California State University system. Since that time, the University has grown and developed into one of the premier public universities, not only in the California State University system, but also in the nation. Indeed, U.S. News & World Report listed CSUCI as 20th among “Top Public Schools” in its 2021 edition of Best Colleges Rankings. In 2020, CollegeNET also ranked CSUCI 20th out of over 1,449 schools in its “Social Mobility Index,” and Money Magazine rated CSUCI as the 15th “Most Transformative College” in the nation.

CSUCI is a public comprehensive university that engages students in critical inquiry and is dedicated to educating leaders for a global society. The University is located in Ventura County and is home to more than 6,900 undergraduate and 239 graduate students. About the Programs:

California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) invites applications for open ranked (Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor) faculty candidates who have a pro-active commitment to curriculum, pedagogy and/or research that address systemic racism, anti-racism, or the experiences of Black communities in the U.S. Although this call is multidisciplinary, the hired faculties may have a joint-appointment or affiliated status with Africana Studies, or collaborate from within the hiring department. Below is a list of the disciplines participating in this cluster hiring search as well as a brief description of their hiring priorities related to anti-racism and teaching, research and/or service related to Black/African American populations:

 Africana Studies

  • The mission of the Africana Studies minor at CSUCI is to support the development of critical consciousness, intellectual curiosity, and principles among our students by facilitating and rewarding sustained interdisciplinary study of the people and cultures of Africa and of African descent. The Minor in Africana Studies explores the cultures, histories, philosophies, experiences, and multiple ways of knowing engaged in by people of African descent globally.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience in program building and developing a major in Africana Studies.  Preferred expertise in Africana/African American Studies, African American History, Ethnic Studies, American Studies, Critical Race Theory, and/or Ethnography.

Anthropology

  • The mission of the Anthropology program at CSUCI is to foster an inclusive academic environment that stimulates social and intellectual growth by providing critical interdisciplinary perspectives on human social and biological diversity across space and time by teaching key theoretical concepts recognizing that the multifaceted nature of human communities and the practical skills necessary for academic and professional success.
  • The hiring program priorities are for a medical anthropologist or a historical archaeologist with academic/research focus on Black/African American populations to continue the growth of the department and assist our expansion into high demand fields that improve the lives of countless individuals from communities experiencing historical and contemporary practices related to discrimination, exclusion, racism, and disinvestment.  

Chemistry

  • The Chemistry program is dedicated to creating a culture of student engagement, favoring knowledge construction over knowledge acquisition. We center undergraduate research in our curriculum, build course-based research experiences into many classes, support active learning in all classes, and are actively working to build connections with regional stakeholder communities (e.g., K-12, community engagement, industry).
  • The hiring priorities are for a faculty member whose research and/or expertise focuses on inclusive pedagogies in STEM curriculum, including a focus on minoritized populations. Candidates might have disciplinary expertise in a range of areas (e.g., Analytical, Biochemistry, Computational, Organic, Inorganic, or Physical), and have expertise in creation of inclusive practices in teaching and research.

 Chicana/o Studies

  • Chicana/o Studies (CHS) was founded as part of the Third World Liberation Front’s efforts to establish Ethnic Studies in U.S. colleges and universities.
    CHS at CSUCI uses a transborder approach to examine racial and social justice issues through its interdisciplinary curriculum, critical pedagogy,  community engagement/service learning projects, and culturally relevant programming.
  • CHS hiring priority is for a faculty member in Ethnic Studies, Black Studies or Chicana/o Studies whose teaching and/or research is in Afro-Latinidad or Black-Latinx relations.

Health Science

  • The mission of the Health Sciences Program is to prepare future health professionals who are competent, compassionate, creative and critical thinkers, and whose work addresses health disparities in the community. Our vision is a just and equitable world of physically, mentally, and socially healthy people living in healthy communities. Rapidly growing and currently enrolling about 700 majors, a majority of whom are historically underrepresented and first generation students, the program prioritizes meeting student needs.
  • The program hiring priority is for a faculty member in Minority Health and Health Disparities, with a specific focus in the African American community. 

 Performing Arts

  • The Performing Arts - Theater emphasis program is in the process of being redesigned into a Theater and Performance Studies program, and aims to provide an inclusive learning environment that promotes and values creativity, collaboration, and culture through the lens of theater and performance, offering students a strong foundation of performance skills in the areas of theater as well as new media. Coursework is anchored in imagination, individual experiences, current and historical events, and the performance traditions of diverse cultures, all as sources of artistic expression and intellectual inquiry.
  • The program hiring priorities are for someone who can bring needed expertise in an intersection of Africana Studies, Performance Studies, and Theater Studies and Practice to our program.

 Political Science and Global Studies

  • The mission of the Political Science and Global Studies program centers on the principles of constitutional democracy, inclusion, participation, and global citizenship. The Program of Political Science cultivates students and teacher-scholar faculty in integrative, research-based understandings of political systems and public sectors. We focus on long-term student success as demonstrated by life-long civic engagement and achievement in a broad spectrum of careers in express service of the mission pillars of CSUCI.
  • The program hiring priorities are for a Political Theory faculty member engaged in critical anti-racist scholarship and pedagogy.  

 Psychology

  • The mission of the Psychology program is to provide academic training in Psychology through a variety of approaches and perspectives. The Psychology Program exposes students to educational experiences that provide excellent training in Psychology and helps them meet program learning outcomes. Our coursework further prepares students to function in a world of diverse cultural, economic, ethnic, historical, and political viewpoints.
  • The program hiring priorities are for a faculty member who is engaged in research on racism and inclusion, up-to-date with the contemporary theories in these areas, and engages students in research on discrimination, ethnic disparities, and/or ethnic identity. 

About the Positions:

The Africana Studies Program seeks a professor (open rank) with teaching and research focus on Africana/African American Studies addressing experiences of Black communities in the U.S. and the diaspora; dedicated to anti-racism, equity, and creating systemic change for our campus and region; and committed to community engagement and a spirit of collaboration to help develop the nascent minor into a major. Field of specialization open; initial disciplinary home for tenure and promotion will align with specialization.

The Anthropology Program seeks a teacher-scholar colleague (open rank) with expertise in either Medical Anthropology or Historical Archaeology. For Medical Anthropology, we seek a scholar with an overarching scholarly agenda focused on issues of health equity/disparities in Black/African American communities in the U.S. and/or the diaspora. For Historical Archaeology, we seek a scholar focused on Black/African American/African Diaspora communities with a willingness to develop a program in California or the American West. Additionally, the program has a strong preference for candidates engaged in applied and/or advocacy activities and who engage students in high impact practices.

The Chemistry Program seeks a professor (open rank) with teaching and/or research focus on inclusive, culturally sustaining instructional practices and dedicated to anti-racism, equity, and the creation of systemic change for our campus and region. Fields of specialization open, including Analytical, Biochemistry, Computational, Organic, Inorganic, or Physical Chemistry.

The Chicana/o Studies Program seeks a professor (open rank) with expertise in Afro-Latinidad and Black-Brown relations and who can expand our teaching on the diverse histories and cultural expressions of African descent populations in the U.S. Latinx communities. We are particularly interested in scholars who focus on African-diasporic peoples, cultures, and histories with particular attention to race, racism, diaspora, identity and social justice movements.

The Health Sciences Program seeks a teacher-scholar colleague (open rank) with expertise in the broad area of Minority Health and Health Disparities, with specific focus in the African American community. This position aims to develop and integrate current topics in health disparities within the curriculum, as well as to enhance the capacity of program faculty and students to incorporate health disparities within their ongoing scholarship and education, so as to fully address the program’s mission statement. Candidates are expected to be able to teach across the curriculum, and to involve students in research and scholarship.

The Performing Arts Program seeks a professor (open rank) to assist in reorienting Theater curriculum to acknowledge the origins, contributions, and confluences of African, Latin, Asian, European, and the Indigenous peoples of North and South America on the theatrical and related performance forms we practice today, and analyze the roles of the theater and performance as they relate to race and racism, class, gender, sexuality, religion, spirituality, national origin, immigration status, ability, tribal citizenship, sovereignty, language, and/or age in diverse contemporary as well as historical cultures and societies.

The Political Science Program seeks a teacher-scholar colleague (open rank) for a Political Theory position engaged in scholarship and critical, anti-racist pedagogy, with the opportunity for this scholar to become involved with the African Studies minor.

The Psychology Program seeks a colleague (open rank) who is up-to-date with theoretical and Psychology disciplinary approaches related to racism and inclusion. The candidate must demonstrate a commitment and ability to teach, mentor, and work with a diverse student population. Students and the CI campus community have a strong social justice interest; the potential candidate will provide opportunities for students to learn and engage in research on discrimination, ethnic disparities, and/or ethnic identity and provide mentorship for those who desire to work with Black communities after graduation.

Minimum Degree Requirements:

Applicants must have a terminal degree in a discipline relevant to programs participating in this call, or closely related fields, at time of appointment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants with a terminal degree with scholarship, teaching, and service that focus on anti-racism, specifically addressing the experiences of Black communities in the U.S. as well as personal lived experience of these issues will be considered.
  • Demonstrated success in building and sustaining academic programs that advance
    cultural engagement, profound commitment to the stewardship of equity and inclusion, deep understanding of the ideas and practice of social justice, and enthusiasm to reflect these values.
  • Demonstrated clear understanding of the racialized challenges faced by our diverse
    student body and equally diverse surrounding community.
  • Record of effective teaching at the university level, achievement in scholarship or creative activities, and institutional service.
  • Evidence of commitment to student success and diversity in University settings.
  • Evidence of commitment and ability to work in teams.
  • Evidence of commitment to one's own discipline and to the broader institution.
  • Applicants should demonstrate the commitment to effectively work with and engage a diverse student population and evidence of how they would successfully mentor minoritized students with special focus on Latinx, Black/African American, American Indian, and Asian/Asian American/Pacific Islander students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated record of success in teaching, research, and community service with anti-racism and Black/African American populations and/or Africana Studies, with a strong record of mentoring underrepresented Black students and faculty.
  • Experience in program building and developing a major in Africana Studies
  • Outstanding entrepreneurial, interpersonal, communication, and strategic planning
    skills to develop and support anti-racist leaders and advocates.
  • Experience in and commitment to ongoing, outcomes-based, program assessment of
    teaching and learning.
  • Experience in on-line or blended teaching and course development.
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and teach courses for hiring departments that engage curriculum and pedagogy that address a variety of manifestations of systemic racism, anti-racism, or the experiences of Black communities in the U.S.
  • Produce scholarly work and publications in the area of expertise.
  • Participate in the development of the new Africana Studies Program, which currently offers a minor, to include an Africana Studies major.
  • We are looking for scholars who are dedicated to anti-racism, equity, and creating systemic change for our campus and our region; someone committed to community engagement and dedicated to a spirit of collaboration.
  • Service activities in the hiring department, School of Arts and Sciences, University, and Community.
  • Advise students and expose students to diverse forms of scholarship.
