Career Development and Alumni Engagement

Student Services Professional II

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:                                                                                                                     

1.   Provide individual and group career counseling.                                                   

2.   Independently develop and conduct presentations, workshops, seminars, guest lectures for students/alumni covering career-related subject matter.

3.    Work with academic programs and employer relations to develop career connections, resources, presentations, internship promotion, and partnership opportunities.                                                                                

1:1 Career Counseling

Provide one-on-one career counseling to students and alumni by assisting them to engage in the career development process and understand how the process is related to career choice and work performance by identifying, assessing, and understanding their competencies, interests, values, and personal characteristics (e.g., salary negotiation, job/internship search strategies, career transitions, LinkedIn). Develop career services and career counseling approaches for changing student populations including students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, non-traditional students, and re-entry students. Assist students and alumni with preparing resumes, developing interviewing skills, and searching for jobs through electronic sources.

Group Facilitation and Promotion

Facilitate career group workshops. Promotes career services to alumni and students by means of various marketing methods, social media, e-mail, and verbal communications. Establishes interactive ways to engage alumni and students in career-related technology resources. Develop and implement career education course materials. Develops collaborative working relationships with employers and assists with recruitment strategies utilizing Handshake and connecting to students via academic programs.

Faculty Engagement

Serve as liaison/consultant to assigned academic programs including consultation and collaboration with faculty in relevant disciplines. Plan and implement major-specific career-related events (e.g., panels, workshops, seminars, networking events, employer/alumni lectures). Works collaboratively with faculty to support classroom integration of career education.  

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

In partnership with CDAE team, develops initiatives for the Career Center related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Serve in an active role to advance a culture of inclusive excellence and ensure department is rooted in the core values of equity, justice, and inclusivity. Commitment to providing inclusive support and resources to enable all students and alumni to seek job and internship opportunities with organizations who honor, respect and practice diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Performs additional related duties as assigned.


Bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences or related field, including upper division or graduate work in counseling techniques, career development theory, plus a minimum of 1-year in student services field preferred in the career services. Ability to select, conduct and interpret informal career assessment tools and other interactive strategies to assist students in clarifying values, personality traits, interests and skills. Master’s degree in counseling or related field preferred. 1-year of experience in career counseling with diverse population of students preferred. Knowledge of career development theories. Strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written), and the ability to work collaboratively with team members and a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Demonstrate critical thinking and investigative skillsets to provide individualized, customized approaches to each individual. Embody a student-centered philosophy to support student/alumni developmental growth. Must be organized and follow directions with minimal to moderate supervision and handle multiple tasks. Maintains confidentiality of student/alumni information (as per FERPA). Computer literate (familiar with PC applications Microsoft Word and Excel), internet savvy and strong internet research capabilities. Knowledge of social media platforms, LinkedIn, career services management platform. Experience conducting workshops or similar group presentations preferred.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Hiring Salary:  $4,304 per month
