PUBLIC AFFAIRS/COMMUNICATION SPECIALIST  II

Responsibilities & Duties:

Ingenuity is used to research facts, data, and information for use in writing a variety of communication materials for University constituents, which are repurposed for print and digital purposes. Serves as the primary writer and copy editor for the University’s bi-annual magazine, Channel. Serves as the primary editor for the University’s online News Center by writing, editing and posting articles and accompanying images. Interviews and writes alumni, faculty, and staff spotlights/articles and coordinates with Web Services for those postings onto the website. Writes and schedules the monthly spotlights for the website’s homepage with accompanying images and coordinates with Web Services for those to be posted on the homepage. Distributes to the campus daily news clippings. Provides writing assistance for special campus projects and news releases as needed. Assists with video projects by prepping interviewees in advance and conducts interviews of the subjects being filmed if needed. During campus emergencies, reports for appropriate communication-related operations in concert with other staff positions in Communication & Marketing.

Provides writing and editing assistance for Development (fundraising) grant proposals, letters of appeal, cases for donor support, and stewardship materials for individuals, foundations and corporations that are compelling and inspiring while varying the writing style to maximize the gift or grant potential for the University. Writes and edits progress and final reports to foundations, corporations or other funders in accordance with the grant-making organization’s preferences and guidelines. Completes research and understands the mission, needs and interests of major foundations and government agencies in order to effectively communicate the University’s fundraising priorities. Assists with writing and editing of the Foundation’s Annual Report. Writes articles and posts them onto the alumni and giving social media accounts including maintaining social media content calendars and monitoring accounts and replies to direct messages or general inquiries during normal business hours and after-hours as needed. Provides monthly reports for social media engagement metrics and analytics for the alumni and giving social media sites. Participates in planning meetings for social media and other communication with members of the Development and Alumni teams.

Requirements of Position:

Bachelor’s degree within the field of English, communication, journalism, public relations, or related field required. Three to five years of professional writing experience within higher education preferred. Excellent grammar, spelling, punctuation and modern English usage. Strong story development and writing skills including advanced editorial skills. Knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver messages for various communication tools. Working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, practices, principles and techniques related to communication. Experience using website content management systems desired. Ability to select pertinent facts and integrate them into communication vehicles. Social media engagement experience in higher education preferred. Demonstrated knowledge using various social media platforms including Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn, and other platforms as they are promoted or utilized by the University. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

Exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong listening and interpretive skills. Highly organized and able to multi-task and manage multiple and concurrent priorities, projects, and deadlines. Ability to maintain confidentiality and make sound decisions.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.

Hiring Range: $4,750 to $5,000 per month
