Accountant II

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

Heavy accounting and audit support including monthly account reconciliations and journal entries. Examines financial documents for completeness. Interprets and reconciles reports and financial data, identifies actual and potential problems, and recommends and performs corrective or preventive actions. Prepares year-end working papers and routine ad-hoc reports. Participates and supports system maintenance, upgrade, and implementation projects. Applies GAAP, GASB, and FASB to the analysis of accounting problems. Utilizes problem solving techniques in finding solutions to accounting problems. Understands and applies applicable rules, regulations, policies, and principles. Uses judgement and makes recommendations regarding accounting activities. Communicates effectively with others inside and outside the unit, including conveying technical information to non-accountants. May include training, guidance, and assistance to other employees and may provide work direction to other professional and/or technical staff. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: 

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field, or a combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Equivalent of two years of professional level accounting in a high volume, automated accounting department required. Higher education or public agency experience preferred. Working knowledge of governmental and/or CSU financial record-keeping methods, procedures, and practices, and automated accounting systems. Strong demonstrated knowledge of general accounting functions to include applicable rules, regulations, internal controls, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) is required. Prepare clear, accurate financial statements and reports; utilize problem-solving techniques in finding solutions to complex accounting problems; understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and principles. Ability to plan, prioritize, and meet important deadlines. Good interpersonal skills are necessary to communicate effectively with campus personnel, the state Controller’s Office, other CSU entities, and governmental and non-profit agencies. Experience using PeopleSoft Finance Software, Excel, and Word. Willingness to work extra hours as needed, particularly at month/year-end closing time.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.

This position is eligible to participate in the telecommute program.  Approval should come from the department administrator and reviewed every six months, as the business needs may change any given time.

Hiring Range:  $5,417 - $5,834 per month
