About the University: 

California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) opened in 2002 as the newest campus in the California State University system. Since that time, the University has grown and developed into one of the premier public universities, not only in the California State University system, but also in the nation. Indeed, U.S. News & World Report listed CSUCI as 20th among “Top Public Schools” in its 2021 edition of Best Colleges Rankings. In 2020, CollegeNET also ranked CSUCI 20th out of over 1,449 schools in its “Social Mobility Index,” and Money Magazine rated CSUCI as the 15th “Most Transformative College” in the nation.

CSUCI is a public comprehensive university that engages students in critical inquiry and is dedicated to educating leaders for a global society. The University is located in Ventura County and is home to more than 6,900 undergraduate and 239 graduate students. Approximately 55% of CSUCI’s students are Pell Grant eligible, and approximately 62% are first-generation college students. About the Program: 

The School of Education builds from the foundations of the undergraduate Liberal Studies option in Teaching & Learning, the undergraduate Early Childhood Studies program, and academic majors in biology, English, mathematics, history, and social studies, and extends to the Master of Arts in Education. The School’s programs contribute to the education profession by producing teachers and school administrators who believe that all students have the ability to achieve high standards, who adapt their teaching to reach all students and who embrace the diversity of all students. These graduates are reflective about their teaching, their attitudes and their ability to work in collaborative analytical teams. The School strives to prepare educators to uplift, inspire, and engage all students, families, and communities with whom they work and works to advance issues of equity, diversity, inclusion, and teaching/educating for justice.

The School has approximately 15 full-time faculty, 55 part-time faculty, 14 staff, and over 900 students. Undergraduate degree programs are offered in Early Childhood Studies and Liberal Studies with emphases in Teaching and Learning and Concentrated Studies. The accredited post-baccalaureate credential programs prepare students to be elementary, secondary, and/or special education teachers with an option to earn a bilingual authorization. The School has partnerships and MOUs with many local school districts for field placements and is engaged in residency and co-teaching models for student teaching in many of the credential programs.

The School currently offers two master’s degrees: an MA in Educational Leadership with emphases in P-12 and Higher Education and an MA in Education with emphases in Curriculum and Instruction and Disability Studies. Licensure for the school administrator’s credential is offered with courses closely aligned to the P-12 emphasis in the MA in Educational Leadership. A Credential Office, Field Placement Office, and the California Physical Education Health Project currently report to the Dean of the School of Education. The School intends to launch its Ed.D. in Educational Leadership in Fall 2023.

The School of Education is actively involved in sponsored research and activities and manages federal, state, and system grants. Funding sources and activities include: the Bechtel Foundation, Early Assessment Program, California Teachers Summit, Math and Science Teacher Initiative, Federal TEACH grants, Chancellor’s Doctorate Initiative Program, and the Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Program. The School is accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

The School of Education at California State University, Channel Islands, invites applications for a tenured Associate Professor or Professor of Educational Leadership who will serve as the inaugural Director of the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership with appointment to begin Summer 2023.

Position
The School of Education is seeking an outstanding faculty colleague to lead and prepare reflective scholar practitioners committed to just, equitable, and inclusive education at the P12 and higher education level, focusing particularly on directing our Ed.D. in Educational Leadership. CSUCI faculty are committed teacher-scholars who bring research and creative discovery to problems of practice in education settings. They teach broadly in the curricula of the department, advise students, and serve on departmental, school, and university-wide committees. The primary responsibilities of this individual will be to provide overall leadership for all aspects of the Ed.D., and to teach, advise, and chair doctoral dissertations in the Ed.D. program. Courses that this person may teach include those in the doctoral program as well as in the undergraduate and graduate programs throughout the School of Education, depending on expertise.

Faculty in the School of Education are engaged in multiple events and programs on nights and weekends, including orientation programs, retreats, community events, and other programs. Faculty are expected to be available beyond the traditional workday, as nearly all classes begin at or after 4 p.m. and include summers.

The successful candidate will be responsible for producing scholarship commensurate with the requirements for tenure, and contributing to and participating in the life and development of the school and department, advising students, serving on committees, and participating in the broader university and Ed.D. relevant regional and national communities and organizations.

Minimum Degree Requirements:

  • Doctorate in Education (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) with an emphasis in P12 and/or Higher Education or a related field

Required Qualifications:

  • Evidence of successful experience in working with Hispanic/Latino students and other historically marginalized individuals and/or underrepresented groups
  • Evidence of work in, and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility
  • A strong record of scholarly accomplishments appropriate to the level of tenured associate or full professor
  • Experience with integration of technology in into courses and programs
  • Evidence of research, teaching, and/or practice regarding issues important in communities of color
  • Applicants should demonstrate the commitment to effectively work with and engage a diverse student population and evidence of how they would successfully mentor minoritized students with special focus on Latinx, Black/African American, American Indian, and Asian/Asian American/Pacific Islander students. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Peer-reviewed scholarship related to historically underrepresented students and/or faculty with a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, or accessibility
  • Community-based work, particularly with communities of color
  • Evidence of scholarly or practical contributions that recognize and value the multiple intersecting identities of today’s PK-12 students
  • Record of leadership roles on teams and in institutions
  • Knowledge of and experience with Institutional Review Board (IRB) policies
  • Track record of grant applications including success in achieving external funding
Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities of the Ed.D. Program Director include but are not limited to:

  • Continued development, implementation, and daily operations of the Ed.D. Program
  • Organization, development, and oversight of Ed.D. curriculum with faculty
  • Leadership of various Ed.D. advisory committees
  • Oversight of the doctoral program benchmarks in consultation with the programs advisory committee
  • Oversight of program communications to students via various means/avenues
  • Planning of course offering matrix and semester schedules, including assessing enrollment capacities, faculty assignments, and strategic enrollment management in collaboration with the Department Chair
  • Recognizing and applying the program’s most recent policies and ensuring that program documentation is up to date and consistent with approved California State University, CSUCI, and SOE policies
  • Budget planning, review, and approval in consultation with Finance Analyst, Department Chair, and Dean
  • Oversight of recruitment and admission of doctoral students
  • Building and maintaining collaborative relationships with faculty and staff across the School and the University, as appropriate
  • Representation of the Ed.D. program within and outside the SOE, CSUCI, and the region
  • Collaboration with other departments and programs as needed
