Position Description

Position Summary

The Health Pre-Professional Advisor provides comprehensive administrative, operational, and advising support to the Health Professions Advising Office (HPAO). Operating under general supervision, this position plays a central role in fostering a welcoming, inclusive community for pre-health students at SDSU. The incumbent supports advising services, peer mentorship coordination, event planning, communication efforts, and student tracking to promote academic and professional success in the health professions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Student Advising & Records Management: Provide basic academic and career advising for assigned first- and second-year pre-health students. Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records using EAB Navigate, ensuring continuity of advising and academic progress tracking.
  • Office & Program Administration: Manage day-to-day office operations, including phone and email correspondence, mail processing, and supply ordering. Support financial and administrative processes such as student organization expenditures and documentation preparation.
  • Application Support & Event Coordination: Coordinate the annual application review process by preparing applicant files, managing schedules, and maintaining communication with students. Plan and organize HPAO workshops, classes, and information sessions, including room reservations and promotional materials.
  • Peer Mentorship Program Oversight: Oversee the peer mentorship program by coordinating mentor training, scheduling front desk coverage, pairing mentors with mentees, tracking mentor activities, and reporting concerns to the Director.
  • Communications & Social Media Management: Create and send professional communications via the HPAO Canvas Homeroom. Manage and update HPAO social media platforms to ensure students have access to current resources and information.
  • Data Tracking & Reporting: Monitor and document office usage, advising activities, and event attendance. Generate semester and annual reports to support office planning and assessment.

Position Information

  • This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. 
  • This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. 
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.  
  • This position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego.

Department Summary

The College of Sciences includes eight academic departments, an additional eight degree issuing programs, eight joint doctoral programs, seventeen research centers and institutes, fifteen Student Support Programs, numerous research groups, clinics and labs, as well as a number of off-campus instructional and research centers, including the Mount Laguna Observatory, Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve, Sky Oaks Field Stations, Fortuna Mountain Research Reserve, Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve and the Coastal & Marine Institute. There are over 300 full- and part-time faculty and 100 clerical and technical employees. There are a wide variety of interests in both teaching and research. 

The Health Professions Advising Office provides information and guidance for students seeking admission to health-related graduate programs. Additionally, provides career counseling and academic planning. This department includes one faculty position and two student assistant positions.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Key Qualifications

  • General knowledge of research and interview techniques, and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Experience presenting to diverse audiences of varying sizes.
  • Experience in writing reports.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.
  • Experience working in a college or university’s admissions, advising, evaluations, registrar, or other student service-related office preferred.
  • Experience with health-related advising and knowledge of healthcare professional school prerequisites and application processes are desirable.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,083 per month. 

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,083 - $7,228 per month.
