About the University: 

California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) opened in 2002 as the newest campus in the California State University system. Since that time, the University has grown and developed into one of the premier public universities, not only in the California State University system, but also in the nation. About the Program: 

The School of Education builds from the foundations of the undergraduate Liberal Studies option in Teaching & Learning, the undergraduate Early Childhood Studies program, and academic majors in biology, English, mathematics, history, and social studies, and extends to the Master of Arts in Education. SOE’s programs contribute to the education profession by producing teachers and school administrators who believe that all students can achieve high standards, who adapt their teaching to reach all students and who embrace the diversity of all students. These graduates are reflective about their teaching, their attitudes, and their ability to work in collaborative analytical teams. SOE strives to prepare educators to uplift, inspire, and engage all students, families, and communities with whom they work and works to advance issues of equity, diversity, inclusion, teaching/educating for justice, and accessibility.

SOE has approximately 15 full-time faculty, 55 part-time faculty, 14 staff, and over 600 students. Undergraduate degree programs are offered in Early Childhood Studies and Liberal Studies with emphases in Teaching and Learning and Concentrated Studies. The accredited post-baccalaureate credential programs prepare students to be elementary, secondary, and/or special education teachers with an option to earn a bilingual authorization. SOE has partnerships and MOUs with many local school districts for field placements and is engaged in residency and co-teaching models for student teaching in many of the credential programs.

SOE currently offers two master’s degrees: an MA in Educational Leadership with emphases in P-12 and Higher Education and an MA in Education with emphases in Curriculum and Instruction and Disability Studies. Licensure for the school administrator’s credential is offered with courses closely aligned to the P-12 emphasis in the MA in Educational Leadership. A Credential Office, Field Placement Office, Graduate Studies Center, and the California Physical Education Health Project currently report to the Dean of the School of Education.

The School of Education is actively involved in sponsored research and activities and manages federal, state, and system grants. Funding sources and activities include: the Bechtel Foundation, Early Assessment Program, California Teachers Summit, Math and Science Teacher Initiative, Federal TEACH grants, Chancellor’s Doctorate Initiative Program, and the Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Program. The School is accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

About the Position: 

SOE is seeking an outstanding faculty colleague to prepare reflective scholar practitioners committed to just, equitable, and inclusive English Language Arts/Literacy education at the P12 level, focusing particularly on early literacy development and reading interventions. CSUCI faculty are committed teacher-scholars who bring research and creative discovery to problems of practice in education settings. They teach broadly in the curricula of the department, advise students, and serve on departmental, school, and university-wide committees. Courses that this person may teach include those in the teacher education programs, as well as undergraduate and graduate courses throughout the SOE, depending on expertise.

Faculty in SOE are engaged in multiple service events and programs on nights and weekends, including orientation programs, retreats, community events, and other programs. Other service to the school, university, and community is also required.  Faculty are expected to be available beyond the traditional workday for these programs which will include classes and events in person, virtual in real time and asynchronously.

The successful candidate is also responsible for producing scholarship commensurate with the requirements at rank, to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the school and department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in the broader university and special education-relevant regional, state, and national communities and organizations.

The primary responsibilities of the Assistant Professor of English Language Arts/Literacy Education will be to teach, advise, and oversee fieldwork.

Minimum Degree Requirements:

  • Doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction or Education (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) with an emphasis in P-12 English Language Arts/Literacy education and/or a related field. (ABD candidates must have completed degree at time of appointment).

Required Qualifications:

  • Possession of an active teaching credential
  • Five years of experience in public P-12 school English Language Arts/Literacy teaching and/or leadership
  • Evidence of experience in working with historically marginalized individuals using innovative instructional approaches and methods that center just, equitable and inclusive education
  • Teaching experience using multiple technologies and the ability to teach and develop courses for online and in person instruction making use of new technologies to further support just, equitable and inclusive education
  • A record of scholarly accomplishments appropriate to the level of assistant professor
  • Evidence of research, teaching, and/or practice regarding English Language Arts/Literacy issues important in BIPOC communities
  • A focused research agenda for advancing knowledge in the field of English Language Arts/Literacy and evidence of or demonstrated strong potential for scholarly and creative activity
  • Applicants should demonstrate the commitment to effectively work with and engage a diverse student population and evidence of how they would successfully mentor minoritized students with special focus on Latinx, Black/African American, American Indian, and Asian/Asian American/Pacific Islander students.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Evidence of successful teaching of courses that prepare candidates for elementary teaching credentials and degrees
    • Experience implementing best practices in foundations of reading and early literacy development
    • Experience in reading intervention strategies
    • Peer-reviewed scholarship related to Hispanic/Latinx students and/or faculty, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility
    • Community-based work, particularly with communities of color
    • Evidence of scholarly and/or practical contributions that recognize and value the multiple intersecting identities of P-12 students
    • Record of seeking and/or achieving external funding
    • Experience with state, regional, and national accreditation procedures
    • Passion for and record of educational commitment and improvement in communities serving first-generation, low-income and LGBTQ students, students of color, and/or linguistically diverse students
Responsibilities:
  • Teaching, engaging in scholarly agenda, and providing service to SOE, university, and relevant community partners and organizations
  • Supporting Chair, as required, in continued development, implementation, and daily operations of the elementary education program with faculty and Senate curriculum processes
  • Participating in relevant advisory committees
  • Recognizing and applying the program’s most recent policies and ensuring that program documentation is up to date and consistent with approved California State University, CSUCI, and SOE policies
  • Supporting recruitment and admissions of students
  • Building and maintaining relationships with faculty and staff across the School and the University, as appropriate
  • Representing the elementary education program within and outside the SOE, CSUCI, and the region including relevant professional organizations.
  • Collaboration with other departments and programs in SOE and CSUCI
  • Supporting continuous improvement, accreditation, and program review processes with relevant state, regional, and national agencies
