Student Services Professional II

** Temporary Position - 1 year appointment with possible extension anticipated. **

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: 

Black Student Outreach Counselor’s time will be spent on recruiting prospective freshman and transfer students and evaluating admission and enrollment requirements for freshman and transfer applicants and admitted students. Independently plans work and carries out day-to-day assignments without immediate direction, including those mentioned below.

Recruitment-Related Functions

  • Implements a comprehensive outreach strategy focused on attracting high-achieving Black students to CSUCI.
  • Initiates visits at community colleges, high schools, community-based organizations, and regional/national college fairs serving Black communities and advises prospective black students on admission and enrollment requirements.
  • Delivers culturally relevant presentations that highlight our vibrant Black student community, academic programs, and support services.
  • Collaborates with Black student organizations to co-create targeted recruitment initiatives and events. Participates in the organization and delivery of on-campus recruitment programs such as information sessions for prospective students and their supporters as well as for admitted freshman and transfer events.
  • Conducts individualized admissions consultations with prospective Black students, addressing their unique questions and concerns (via email, telephone, and in-office consultations) providing clear and concise explanations to complex admission requirements and application procedures.
  • Partners with on- and off-campus organizations to increase awareness of our University amongst Black communities.
  • Advocates for initiatives and programs designed to foster an inclusive campus environment for Black students.
  • Aids prospective students who are not regularly admissible to the University in developing a plan to attain their educational goals.
  • Connects Black students with scholarships, mentorships, and other resources designed to support their academic and personal success.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with high school counselors, community leaders, and alumni to build a robust pipeline of talented Black students.
  • Represents the California State University system through making various presentations to Black communities, including, but not limited, to application workshops, educational opportunities and support services, among topics.
  • Stays abreast of issues impacting Black students in higher education and recommends solutions to support their success.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills in Black student outreach and enrollment.  Attends periodic professional development training/meetings sponsored by related organizations and the CSU and actively participates in unit meetings and planning retreats.
  • Collaborates with colleagues across departments to develop innovative recruitment strategies and streamline the admissions process for Black students.

Evaluation Functions

  • Applies knowledge of student records (transcripts, test scores, and other official documents) to determine provisional and final admissibility in accordance with established criteria and procedures.
  • Makes appropriate recommendations and decisions by gathering and analyzing data, logical reasoning, and drawing valid conclusions as to whether an applicant or admitted student meets or continues to meet admission and enrollment requirements.
  • Interprets and applies rules and regulations with autonomy to accomplish admissions and recruitment goals.
  • Utilizes e-communication and social media tools to enhance CSUCI’s profile in the broader community and engages students in live chats.
  • Utilizes technology, including but not limited to PeopleSoft Student Information System, WebADMT Application system, and CRM communication tool.
  • Collaborates with other offices to assist students in successfully navigating the admission and enrollment process.
  • Assists in the development and editing of communications and systems that facilitate a simpler and more streamlined admissions and enrollment process.
  • Advises rescinded students on the appeals process, participates in the committee to review appeals, and communicates the outcome of those appeals.
  • Calls and emails students to follow up on incomplete admission files and to remind them of deadlines.
  • Assists in training and providing direction to student assistants who respond to inquiries about the admissions and enrollment process.

Assists with other admissions and recruitment related functions and other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: 

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field.

Minimum three years of experience in college admissions or a related field, with a demonstrated focus on Black student outreach and enrollment.

Proven track record of success in recruiting and enrolling Black students in higher education.

Strong understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities faced by Black students in higher education.

Experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of student recruitment. Demonstrated ability to create and foster positive working relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, students, student organizations, public and private agencies, among others. Preferred experience in evaluating admissions files and accurately determining admission. Ability to create presentations using related software and familiarity with office-related software used for word processing and creating spreadsheets. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements. This classification requires fundamental written and oral communication skills including a sound foundation in grammar, spelling, and punctuation; an ability to understand standard office procedures; an ability to learn office technology systems; an ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations; and typing and keyboard skills. Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle for transportation is a must. Ability to work frequent evenings and weekends is required and to travel overnight on business trips. Ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds (primarily in the form of recruitment materials).

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.

The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.

Hiring Range: $4,841 per month
