Student Services Professional I

Career Coaching (40%): Provides individual and group career counseling by assisting staff with the coordination of 1:1 and group career coaching using a variety of integrative career theory methods to engage students and alumni in the career development process. Assists staff with the development of related assessment methods to measure student learning acquired from participation in workshops and career programs. Develops career resources for changing student populations including students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, non-traditional students, and re-entry students. Assists students and alumni with preparing resumes, developing interviewing skills, and searching for jobs and internships through electronic sources.

Presentations and Outreach (35%): Collaboratively develops and conducts presentations, workshops, seminars, lectures for students/alumni covering career-related subject matter. Assists with the development and presentation of workshop curriculum related to job/internship search strategies, interview skills, networking, and resume/cv development to assist students and alumni. Implements interactive ways to engage students/alumni using career-related technology resources including LinkedIn and Handshake. Partners with campus departments to increase awareness of career-related resources offered at the Career Development Center; and assists with the execution of career events/programs including annual Career & Internship Fairs, Employer Panels, and networking events. Facilitates career group workshops. Promotes career services to alumni and students by means of various marketing methods, social media, e-mail, and verbal communications.

Faculty Engagement (25%): Works with academic programs and employer relations to develop career connections, resources, presentations, internship promotion, and partnership opportunities. Serves as liaison/consultant to assigned academic programs including consultation and collaboration with faculty in relevant disciplines. Plans and implements major-specific career-related events (e.g., panels, workshops, seminars, networking events, employer/alumni lectures). Works collaboratively with faculty to support classroom integration of career education.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: In partnership with CDAE team, develops initiatives for the Career Center related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Serves in an active role to advance a culture of inclusive excellence and ensure department is rooted in the core values of equity, justice, and inclusivity. Commits to providing inclusive support and resources to enable all students and alumni to seek job and internship opportunities with organizations who honor, respect, and practice diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Performs additional related duties as assigned.


Bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences or related field, plus a minimum of 1 year in student services field with preference for experience in the career services working with diverse student populations. Flexibility and willingness to learn with a positive attitude. Working knowledge of college student development, career development, and counseling theories, research techniques, and principles of individual and group behavior. Strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written), and the ability to work collaboratively with team members and a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Demonstrate critical thinking and investigative skillsets to provide individualized, customized approaches to each person. Embody a student-centered philosophy to support student and alumni developmental growth. Must be organized and follow directions with minimal to moderate supervision and handle multiple tasks. Maintains confidentiality of student and alumni information (as per FERPA). Computer literate (familiar with PC applications Microsoft Word and Excel), internet savvy and strong internet research capabilities. Knowledge of social media platforms, LinkedIn, career services management platform. Experience conducting workshops or similar group presentations preferred.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.

The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

This position is eligible to participate in the telecommute program.  Approval should come from the department administrator and reviewed every six months, as the business needs may change at any given time.

Hiring Range:  $3,764 - $4,000 per month
